The new linkage gives a nice notchy feel between gears. The movement is precise, and very positive. It also reduces the distance the lever must travel between shifts. The difference isn't simply in the stick, but in the componentry of the linkage. All Impreza linkages are essentially the same, but lack the most important component for the crispness we desire, and that is harder bushings. All the bushings in the STi short shift linkage are harder than those in the stock linkage. This is what gives the STi system a more positive feel, and the lever gives the shorter throw. The notchy feeling is great for rallying. You won't have that vague feeling that will leave you looking down to see if you hit your gear, or are in gear.
